My story
I came to the United States from Vietnam at age ten as a political refugee. Like many immigrant families starting over, we had very little. My family of four shared a small one-bedroom apartment with five extended family members—9 of us in total—and everyone did what they could to help. Some nights, we stayed up late cutting loose threads from garments for pennies per piece to earn extra income. My dad also attended ESL classes at Lincoln Education Center, right here in Area 4, as he worked to build a better future for our family.
Like many immigrant families, work was simply part of everyday life. I cannot remember a time when I was not helping in some way, even as a child in Vietnam. After coming to America, we often worked seven days a week and took whatever odd jobs were available.
Our beginnings were simple. We shopped at Goodwill, and Ross felt like a luxury saved for Christmas. Some of my first memories of cakes, cookies, and other treats in America came through the kindness of local churches and food assistance programs. I have never forgotten that kindness.
Over time, members of my family became successful business owners. Today, we are proud parents raising the next generation to value education, kindness, responsibility, hard work, and community.
Growing up, I helped translate between parents and teachers, volunteered at the local library, participated in Toys for Tots, and stayed involved in community programs.
In 2022, I was honored to be elected to the Rancho Santiago Community College District Board of Trustees.
For the past four years, including my time as Board President, I have worked with my fellow trustees to support opportunities for students at every stage of life. I have especially supported workforce and certificate programs that lead to good careers, greater access for adults returning to school, and investment in bachelor’s degree programs that allow students to earn career-focused degrees closer to home and at a lower cost.
As I seek re-election this November, I hope sharing my story helps you know a little more about who I am and what shaped me.
I am thankful for the support of community members and leaders from many different backgrounds. Their trust means a great deal to me.
